Sydney
Screenlight Pictures Pty Ltd is an independent Australian production company based in Sydney. It was registered on 21 December 2007. Writer-director Kosta Nikas leads it.
Nikas is Greek-Australian. He worked as a journalist and in communications for more than fifteen years before making films. He was script translator and dialogue coach on the ABC series The Slap, adapted from the novel by Christos Tsiolkas. Part of his growing up, his schooling, and his army service were in Greece.
The company’s films are his films. The shorts are Light (2011), Mother’s Day (2012), Boat People (2013), Utopia (2019) and Bordello (2022). The feature is Sacred Heart (2016). Sacrifice, a new short, wrapped in 2025.
Sacred Heart premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival and was released in North America by Gravitas Ventures. Utopia won a jury prize in Santa Fe and best comedy at Toronto Shorts, then found a large audience through Omeleto. A feature screenplay drawn from that world is in development, with the romantic gangster comedy Crooked Chef and The Funeral, planned as his first Greek-language feature.
Speaking to SBS about Sacred Heart, Nikas said: “I don’t like cinema that is preachy or that spoon-feeds. I respect my audience and I hope people will be able to engage with that.”
